Turkish village ravaged of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma affecting the lining of the lungs are a rare cancer called almost half of the deaths in the impoverished Turkish village of Tuzkoy and two other villages nearby. The problem has to concerned local authorities that a full shift is all residences in progress.

Dubbed "Cancer village" in the media, Tuzkoy was declared a dangerous zone, in 2004 and moved approximately 250 new housing families have a mile away. The rest of the population of 2,350 is expected to move when additional houses are ready. The move is subsidised by the Government.

"The number of cases of mesothelioma in the Tuzkoy has been approximately 600 to 800 times higher than international standards", said Murat Tuncer, head the Ministry of health to fight cancer.

Are 48 percent of all deaths in the three villages of mesothelioma, and accounts for about a quarter of 40 to 60 cases of mesothelioma in Turkey every year.

Authorities plan for the "new Tuzkoy" to be completed until 2011.
